The process of moving across the country is always complicated. Whether you are renting a van, shipping your car, or hiring movers, it’s important to plan as early as possible and have all your ducks in a row. Since big moves can be daunting, we put together a list of tips to make your cross country move a little bit easier.
Go through your possessions and make four piles: keep, sell, giveaway, and trash/recycle. Sort one room at a time. If you haven’t used something in two years, it’s probably time for that item to find a new home.
Think about your new climate. If you are moving somewhere cold, you may not need all those sandals and outdoor furniture. Take only what you can use in the new location.
Get rid of heavy or easily replaced furniture that doesn’t hold sentimental value. The sleeper sofa you used once? Better gifted or sold than in your moving truck.
Pack rarely-used and off-season items a few months in advance. This will save you some time when it comes down to the wire.
In a clear plastic tub, pack the items you’ll need right away when you get to your new home. This includes a few cleaning supplies, toilet paper, hand soap, paper towels, water, and maybe a change of clothes. Think of anything you may need that first night and have it at the ready. You may want to include sheets and pillowcases to put on your bed.
Mark each box with what is inside and what room in the new home it belongs in. You can use certain colors to designate rooms, or get colored tapes and mark a strip along the top. You and your movers will thank you for the organization.
If there is anything you can have shipped at a good price, do so. Shipping your car is one thing that will save you a lot of stress on moving day. If you are driving a truck, you won’t want to worry about your car getting across the country with you too. Have your car shipped to your destination and avoid gas usage and wear and tear.
