When the sun rises in Scottsdale on January 13th, enthusiasts will flock to the site, or to their laptops, to watch what Barrett-Jackson has on display this year. As Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO puts it, Barrett-Jackson is “more than just an auction, it is a celebration of the automotive lifestyle.” Here’s a little history and a glimpse at what you can expect this month as the 47th annual auction gets underway.
Barrett-Jackson was established in 1971 and has grown to become the leader in collector events. With automobilia on offer, in addition to a collection of classic and exotic cars, Barrett-Jackson is regarded as a barometer of the car industry.
What began as a simple festival that Russ Jackson and Tom Barrett called “Fiesta de los Autos Elegantes” has grown to a 4-city event that draws bidders and sellers like Jay Leno, Sammy Hagar, and Reggie Jackson, as well as other athletes and celebrities. Some of the first cars auctioned off included a pair of Mercedes-Benz 770K Phaetons. Once Jackson and Barrett passed away – in 1993 and 2004, respectively – Russ’s son Craig took over the company. Today the auction draws over 200,000 spectators.
This year is special, in part because Barrett-Jackson will display 21 cars from the Steve Todhunter Collection. This stunning Scottsdale-based collection features a Ferrari 458 Italia Speciale Coupe and a 2018 McLaren 720S along with other low-mileage exotic and domestic cars. Craig Jackson calls Todhunter’s offerings a “phenomenal addition” to an already impressive line-up.
In addition to these Todhunter classics, Benz and Harley enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy this year. There will also be a broad selection of classics from the 70s and 80s on display. The entire Barrett-Jackson docket covers 100 years of automotive history and includes a 1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom III Freestone & Webb Sedanca De Ville. What else can viewers look forward to? How about this Porsche 911 Carrera, this hard-to-find 1964 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, or this 1958 Cadillac Custom Topless Roadster? That’s just the beginning of what Barrett-Jackson will showcase this year.
If you decide to bid at Barrett-Jackson, you can expect quite a few perks. Along with preferred seating and a hosted bar, you’ll get an invitation to the Opening Night Gala, where you might just chat with celebrities. In essence, you’ll be participating in a lifestyle event like no other! And that’s before the excitement of a world-class auction even begins!
