Broken down car in snow. Holiday travel tips JP Logistics blog

Do you have holiday road trip plans this year? Whether you are headed to Grandma’s house or a vacation destination for the holidays, we have a few holiday travel tips to help make your drive smooth and safe.

5 Holiday Travel Tips for the Safest Holiday Travel:

  1. Last-Minute Check:

Be sure the tires are properly inflated, the oil has been recently changed, the window washer fluid is topped off, the wipers have been checked recently and the entire car is in good, working order.

  1. Pack an Emergency Kit:

Pack an all-in-one emergency kit in your car before the trip. Actually, it’s good to have ones of these in your car at all times and they are an easy pick up at any auto supply store. They typically come with jumper cables, a flashlight, batteries, even a rain poncho and a first aid kit. Kitty litter is also good to pack. If you get stuck in snow or ice, it’s good to have a large bag of kitty litter in the trunk. Lay it down in front of the wheels if you have front-wheel drive, or behind the tires if you have rear-wheel drive. It will give you enough traction to get out if you are stuck in snow.

  1. Pack De-icing Spray:

De-icing spray costs only a couple of bucks at your local hardware store and you can spray it onto your windows to melt the ice. This makes it so much easier to get you windows ice-free.

  1. Establish Your Route and Share It:

Map your route out and share with those you are visiting and at least one person back home – so they know when to expect you and when to sound the alarm if you don’t appear.

5. Reserve Overnight Stops in Advance:
Get your hotels lined up ahead of time and have the reservation information with you in the car. Many families are also traveling during the holidays, and hotels book up quickly. In case you’re delayed or need to make a change in plans, you’ll have the contact information and confirmation codes to be able to do so and make new accommodations.

We hope these tips will help you have a safe and happy holiday trip. If driving is too much of a struggle or you are worried about your classic or luxury car making the drive, have it shipped to your destination! Also remember a roadside assistance program can be a lifesaver. Look at your options and choose a plan that gives you the security of mind that someone can fix the tire or tow the vehicle if find yourself in trouble on the road.
